Irish Miner Arrested in Wombwell on Murder Charge

Arrested on Monday night, Anthony Ruane (45), miner, residing at Park Street, Wombwell, was brought up at a special court at the bars West Riding police station yesterday charged with the wilful murder of Annie Horkam of Grallagh, County Mayo, Ireland on March 22, 1922.

The proceedings were very brief, Supt Blacker merely giving evidence of arrest.

The superintendent said he was instructed by Chief Constable Col D’Coke to asked the magistrates to remand Ruane until the arrival of an escort from the Irish Free State Police.

Prison was amended accordingly for the escort.

Ruane is well known amongst the Irish community at Wombwell. It appears he came into the district from Ireland last April, and secured work at the Cortonwood colliery. He Lodged at the time in Gower Street but afterwards removed to Park Street.

Interviewed, Jesse, his landlady said she knew nothing about him, except that he remarked that he was a married man, and had a daughter, about 15 years of age. She said he was well educated.
